The kids school does a "school on the move" challenge every February. The challenge focused on; eating 5 fruits and veggies, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour of physical activity, and 0 sugary drinks.
During the challenge I realized the kids get plenty of physical activity, they play football or catch LOTS! All three kids are doing a sport to keep them active.. we are running to hockey for one child, volleyball the other and even squeezing in a horse lesson for the 3rd child. Even during the cold days, they are outside either playing football or makeing snow forts and even sledding. They don't watch TV (except for Mondays' we watch the Biggest Looser as a family). However...Ipods...they tend to send too much time on them. Minecraft has taken over! During the challenge, I set out a veggie/fruit tray more often. I loved doing this! I need to do it more often. The kids ate more fruit and veggies that week I had it out everyday. My kids eat healthy for the most part, but don't get me wrong, they still reach for the sugar food when it is there.
Suragy drinks...well I don't buy them. I NEVER have soda or juice in the house. I have been buying 100% juice boxes for K's lunch but that is it. So if we go through the drive thru, they order a sprite or other soda. I don't want to deny them soda, but I want it to be a drink of choice at our house. Actually...Devin ordered a water the last time we were at the drive thru!!
Someday I would like to limit carbs, sugar, and Ipod time! Baby steps..right?!?
